Summer camp has always had a huge influence in my life. From my first time at horse camp when I was ninie, through my teen years and well into adulthood working as a counselor, housekeeper, wrangler, and director I have learned many things, experienced the love of many people, had adventures, grown tremendously, and made lasting friends.
This song begins:
"We're tied to our memories/They won't let us stray/We're not gonna lose ones we made yesterday..."
One of the traditions that I participated in for several years even after I stopped working at Camp River Ranch in the summers was the fall work parties. Groups of former and current summer staff would gather, along with Girl Scout troops from the area, and together we'd chop wood, clear trails, and do other upkeep work to keep the camp clean and usable for the upcoming winter. This song had just come out and my friend had brought the cassette tape (yes, I'm dating myself a bit here!) with her for the weekend. We played it over and over in the kitchen as we washed dishes for the weekend, and tried to figure out the chords for it on our guitars later on that night.
My memories of camp are precious to me and this song expresses the value of memories, as well as the feeling of being guided to the place in life where you are right now. Living in the moment is important, because life is fleeting.
